Quarterback John Charles led Portland State to 20 wins on the football field over two seasons, including a pair of Western Football Conference Championships and the NCAA II semifinal game in both years. Charles passed for 5,563 yards and a remarkable 58 touchdowns in just two years. His 58 TDs ranks third all-time at PSU despite playing only two seasons. He threw for a then-PSU record 592 yards in a game against Cal Poly. Charles was a two-time Western Football Conference Player of the Year, a Harlon Hill Award finalist and named All-American in 1992.
John Charles was named Sports Illustrated national player of the week in 1991, named national player of the week twice in 1992 with USA Today and Sports Illustrated, honored by NCAA for winning total offense national title in 1992, passed for three touchdowns or more in 17 of 18 starts the past two seasons, three or more touchdowns in every game.
Despite wrist injury and 8 games, he finished third in balloting with 106 points and 13 first place votes. He completed a perfect sweep of NCAA All-America First Teams by being selected to the USA Today All-America Team, Kodak/American Football Coaches Association, and the Associated Press All-America Teams.
In 1993, John entered the NFL as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons. In 1996, he played one season for the Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats until a shoulder injury forced him to retire.

Grant Youth Football has a rich history as a one of the regions most successful youth football programs. GYF has been participating in youth football for 20 years and has sent over 1,000 student athletes through the high school. GYF is now a proud member of the Tualatin Valley Youth Football League.
The Tualatin Valley football league is a tackle based football program for 3rd through 8th grade youth in the Tualatin Valley and Portland metropolitan area in Oregon. With over 50 associations, the program now boasts over 6,500 players and 500+ volunteer coaches.
The TVYFL is a non-profit football club, whose goal is to provide safe and enjoyable athletic competition. Good sportsmanship, fun developing student athletes and individual growth are our main goals.
